ISLAMIC “Morocco” BANS THE BURKA amid growing fears over terrorism, local media claims

The North African country’s interior ministry is said to be cracking down on burqas due to reports that terrorists have been wearing them when carrying out attacks.

Burkas, or “niqabs” as they are also known, cover the whole face leaving just a small gap for the eyes.

Other headscarves will still be permitted in Morocco, such as the hijab, which covers the hair but not their whole face – the type of headscarf favoured by King Mohammed VI.

According to Moroccan news outlet LE360, an official from the government’s interior ministry said: “We have taken the step of completely banning the import, manufacture and marketing of this garment in all the cities and towns of the kingdom.”

And another outlet claimed that in commercial districts of Casablanca, the country’s economic capital, interior ministry officials carried out “awareness-raising campaigns with traders to inform them of this new decision.”

The ban comes days after Moroccan media claimed the CIA had alerted its authorities that the North African country is vulnerable to Berlin and Nice-style truck attacks.

According to local media, the CIA has warned Morocco is at risk of terrorism

The CIA said nearly 30 per cent of Daesh foreign fighters have recently fled Iraq and Syria and returned to their home countries.

Rumours of the ban have prompted outrage from Morocco’s fundamentalist Salafist communities, who wear the niqab.

Salafist sheikh Hassan Kettani wrote on Facebook: “Is Morocco moving towards banning the niqab that Muslim women have worn for five centuries?”

He added: “If true it would be a disaster.”

But lawmaker Nouzha Skalli, a former family and social development minister, heralded the ban as “an important step in the fight against religious extremism”.
